Conditionally Rare 1913 Indian Eagle, MS66

1913 $10 MS66 PCGS. This is a common date, one of the seven highest-mintage Indian eagles, and yet it is seldom seen in Gem condition. This issue roughly equates in rarity to the 1910, 1912, and 1915. It seems that only 1926 and 1932 are regularly available in the highest grades. There are currently 502 examples of the 1913 graded as MS64 at NGC and PCGS combined. At MS65, the certified population drops precipitously, to just 145 pieces at the two major services. Premium Gems, such as this coin, are downright rare. PCGS has seen a scant 12 examples at MS66, and NGC has only certified 11 pieces at the same grade level, as of (11/08). A single MS67 representative is known, having been graded as such by PCGS.
According to The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens (Ivy Press, 2006):

"A small group of about 20 Uncirculated pieces was discovered in Niagara Falls, New York when an old tavern was razed after many years of serving the local community. They were found behind the bar-back when it was removed by contractors. These examples have served to make this date somewhat less scarce than was previously thought. ...
The 1913 is typically sharply defined, and the surfaces are most often highly lustrous. In fact, the luster seen on this issue competes with that seen on some of the best produced S-mint tens. Color varies somewhat from greenish-gold to light to medium yellow gold. The surfaces have virtually none of the granularity seen on the 1910 to 1912 Philadelphia Mint coins, and can be either frosty or moderately satiny in appearance."

This outstanding example is brilliant, with frosty luster and beautiful yellow-gold coloration. Only a faint trace of rose toning is visible on the obverse. Sharply struck with excellent design details on both sides. The surfaces are not perfect, but they are certainly of exceptional quality, with only a few tiny abrasions or scrapes. Gold coins, especially those of large diameter, such as the eagles and double eagles, were especially susceptible to marks because the metal is quite soft. For this reason, MS65 and finer examples are seldom encountered. This conditionally rare Premium Gem represents a significant opportunity for the specialist to acquire one of the finest surviving examples of the 1913 Indian Head eagle.
