Description

Exceptional MS66 1913 Ten Dollar

1913 $10 MS66 PCGS. Only moderately scarce when compared to other P-mint ten Indians, this piece is certainly a distinguished survivor. A small group of about 20 high grade 1913 tens were found a number of years ago in Niagara Falls, New York. They were found behind the bar-back in an old tavern and removed by the contractors. A couple of near-perfect examples are known that are not from this hoard, but we are uncertain of the origin of this piece.
Only one coin has been certified as finer by the two major grading services. That particular coin was sold in our offering of the Steven Duckor Collection and it realized $126,500. The highwater mark for an MS66 was in our 2007 FUN Auction and that coin brought $32,200. To date (8/07) only 22 coins have been certified in MS66 grade (12 at PCGS and 10 at NGC). These pieces realistically represent 14-17 coins once resubmissions are factored out.
The surfaces of this piece has a fine granularity and are extraordinarily bright and radiant. Like the Duckor coin, this piece has mint luster that is bright and frosted and is suggestive of an S-mint coin. The color is yellow-gold with just the slightest hint of reddish patina. The only marks that are noticeable (with magnification) are located on the reverse on the upper tail feathers and in the field above the M in UNUM. Fully struck in all areas. Simply amazing quality and one of the finest P-mint tens available.(Registry values: N4719)
