    1913-S Ten Dollar, MS64
    Above-Average Eye Appeal

1913-S $10 MS64 NGC. The 1913-S, with an original mintage of just 66,000 pieces, is one of the rarest dates in the Indian Head ten dollar series in high grade. In fact, the 1913-S was once considered the undisputed key to the series. Since the advent of third-party grading, however, this issue has been moved out of top place by the 1911-D (Mike Fuljenz, Indian Gold Coins of the 20th Century).
NGC and PCGS population reports indicate that most 1913-S ten dollar survivors are in the Very Fine to About Uncirculated range, where they remain very scarce. The two services combined have certified a little over 200 coins in Mint Sate, primarily in the MS60 to MS63 level. The certified population consists of only 24 examples in near-Gem and a mere six pieces finer, some of which are likely resubmitted or crossover coins.
The present MS64 offering displays a soft orange-gold color imbued with traces of mint-green. Both sides are granular in texture with frosty surfaces, which is characteristic for the issue. Overall though, this piece exhibits above-average, vibrant luster. Sharp definition is noted on most of the design elements, especially Liberty's hair curls and bonnet feathers. Most of the eagle's plumage is also strong, except for softness on the eagle's shoulder and trailing leg. A handful of minute marks barely precludes Gem classification. That said, the surfaces of this coin fare much better than most '13-S survivors that show "almost always ... noticeably abraded surfaces. Very few examples can be found without some distracting bagmarks" (David Akers, 20th Century United States gold Coins, p. 179). All in all, this piece displays above-average eye appeal for the issue. Census: 12 in 64, 3 finer (11/11).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 28GZ, PCGS# 8874)

Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
