Choice 1913-S Indian Eagle
Second-Rarest Indian Eagle in High Grade
Only Three Finer PCGS Coins

1913-S $10 MS64 PCGS. CAC. The 1913-S Indian eagle is one of the leading condition rarities of the series. The reported mintage was only 66,000 pieces, a small production total for any 20th century coin. Unlike many gold issues produced after World War I, the 1913-S seems to have circulated extensively at the time of issue, and few specimens were saved for numismatic purposes. Today most examples seen are in circulated grades, and David Akers remarks, "After the 1911-D, the 1913-S is the rarest Indian Eagle in high grades" and "...this date is, without question, one of the 'stoppers' of the series for a collector trying to assemble a nice uncirculated set." PCGS has certified only 11 coins in MS64, with four examples finer, while NGC has graded an even dozen pieces in Choice condition, with a mere three specimens finer (11/11). Even these small totals may include some duplicate submissions.
The 1913-S began to appear at auction by the 1940s, with an "extremely fine" specimen in lot 1493 of the Flanagan Collection (Stack's, 3/1944) bringing $34. The date improved its performance by leaps and bounds as the few high-grade examples began to come on the market. Currently, the record prices realized for a 1913-S belongs to the magnificent MS66 PCGS coin in lot 3520 of the FUN Signature Auction (Heritage, 1/2009), which realized $299,000.
The present coin is a delightful Choice specimen, with sharply detailed design elements. Liberty's hair shows fine definition on the individual strands, and the lower headdress feathers are strongly delineated. There is a semicircular area of roughness in the lower left obverse field that is seen on many specimens of this date. The greenish-gold surfaces have a slightly granular texture, with frosty mint luster. A comparable specimen will be quite difficult to locate.(Registry values: N7079)
