Description

1914 Indian Eagle, MS67
Condition Census Rarity

1914 $10 MS67 PCGS. "Although generally perceived as another common Philadelphia Mint issue, the 1914 is scarcer than generally believed": Thus begins Mike Fuljenz's narrative on this issue in Indian Gold Coins of the 20th Century. The date is particularly rare above the Gem grade level. The grading services list 26 pieces in MS66 or MS66+, but with only 11 appearances of such a coin at auction in our Permanent Auction Archives, including reappearances of previously offered examples, one begins to question the accuracy of the certification data. In MS67 -- the finest grade achieved -- PCGS lists three coins and NGC one (6/16). Only one of these has ever appeared in our auctions, being sold 14 years ago to the tune of $23,000. The most recent auction record we have for a high-end 1914 eagle is a PCGS MS66+ example in lot 4807 of the Central States Signature sale (Heritage, 4/2016), which realized an impressive $44,650. The present coin surpasses that piece in technical quality and eye appeal. The strike is bold, and the satiny, unabraded surfaces are vibrantly lustrous. The original yellow-gold surfaces glisten when rotated beneath a light.
