Description

Enchanting Gem 1914-D Eagle

1914-D $10 MS65 NGC. The 1914-D is accessible (though far from common) in Gem Mint State, a fact Garrett and Guth attribute to the time many examples spent in overseas storage, waiting out the four decades of American gold prohibition. This time was a luxury not afforded to many later mintmarked issues, hence their rarity today.
Though many 1914-D eagles were saved, few have survived so well as this MS65 representative. Bold yellow luster takes on sun-gold attributes at parts of the margins, and the hair over Liberty's ear is better-defined than usual. Smooth surfaces are carefully preserved and delightful. Census: 40 in 65, 18 finer (7/10).
