High-End MS65 1914-D Ten Dollar1914-D $10 MS65 PCGS. Augustus Saint-Gaudens wanted to use these Liberty bust, standing eagle motifs on the twenty dollar coin, but correspondence with President Theodore Roosevelt resulted in them being used instead on the new ten dollar eagle. The bust on the coin is virtually identical to the head of the gilded Nike (representing Victory) of Saint-Gauden's earlier Sherman monument in Central Park; though in this case Victory improbably wears an Indian feathered war bonnet instead of the original laurel crown. Produced yearly until 1916 but intermittently after that, the series has a few rarities both because of low mintages and from melting following the 1933 presidential Executive Order that recalled gold coins. This is a sharply struck and highly lustrous example that has unusually smooth surfaces. Uncommon at the Gem level, PCGS has graded only seven 1914-D eagles higher (05/08).
