Description

Incredible 1914-D Premium Gem Eagle

1914-D $10 MS66 PCGS. The 1914-D is generally considered the second most-available D-mint ten dollar Indian, behind the 1910-D. David Akers says of the 1914-D in his May 19, 1998 cataloging of the Thaine B. Price Collection:

"With the sole exception of the 1910-D, the 1914-D is the most common branch mint Indian Head Eagle. It is readily obtainable in mint state grades of Choice Uncirculated and lower, and even Very Choice Uncirculated examples are only scarce and not rare. However, this is another example of a condition rarity issue since, in gem condition, the 1914-D is actually very rare, much more so than any of the Philadelphia issues from 1908-1915 except the 1909, and roughly comparable in rarity to such more highly rated issues as the 1908-S and 1916-S."

PCGS and NGC have certified slightly more than 50 Gem 1914-D eagles. Fifteen have graded Premium Gem, and nine Superb Gem. A number of these coins are likely resubmissions.
The usual granularity shows on both sides of the Premium Gem ten dollar offering in the current sale, as does bright, satiny mint luster. Both sides reveal memorable color, with each consisting of a delicate mixture of peach-gold and mint-green, along with an occasional hint of lilac on the reverse. An exacting strike manifests itself with crisp delineation on the design elements, and both faces are lovingly preserved. A couple of faint rim marks at 9:00 on the obverse, a minute field contact above the rear of the wing, and a couple of more concealed within the plumage below are mentioned solely for identification purposes; and even these are only visible under high-powered magnification.
This piece exhibits great technical quality and incredible eye appeal. The ever-increasing popularity and demand for this series is evidenced by the realization of $109,250 for the Dr. Steven Duckor MS67 example of this date sold by Heritage in April 2006. Population: 4 in 66, 3 finer (11/08).
