Unsurpassable 1914-D Ten Dollar, MS67 NGC

1914-D $10 MS67 NGC. Over the years, numismatists have come to associate examples of this issue with advanced type collections. While it is true that collectors can associate the 1914-D with other "common" issues such as the 1932, 1926, and 1910-D, any and all similarity ends above the MS 63 grade tier. While full Gem representations of this issue are deservedly scarce, Superb Gem representations such as this are, in a word, rare. This exquisite piece is boldly struck and readily expounds the endearing qualities of Saint-Gaudens' design. The faces are bright and exhibit rolling mint frost. While we can best describe the color of this piece as yellow-gold, modest orange overtones are also evident and strengthen the overall eye appeal. As one would expect from this vaunted grade, the surfaces are smooth and free of distracting bagmarks. For pedigree purposes, however, we report a single contact mark in the field between the top of the eagle's head and the TA of STATES. In short, this is a lovely piece and, as neither NGC nor PCGS have certified any example higher, is easily among the finest known. An extraordinary opportunity for the gold specialist who demands the best. Population: 4 in 67, 0 finer (7/03).(#8876) (NGC ID# 28H3, PCGS# 8876)

Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
