Pristine Superb Gem 1914-D Eagle
    One of Three at PCGS

1914-D $10 MS67 PCGS. CAC. The present Superb Gem 1914-D Indian eagle is tied for the finest known at PCGS, one of only three submissions at the MS67 level with none finer (11/11). NGC has also graded six submissions at the Superb Gem level, and again there are none finer.
It is one thing for a piece of Philadelphia Mint matte proof gold to grade PR66 or PR67, but it is another thing entirely when a business strike branch mint gold piece from early in the 20th century manages to achieve so lofty a grade as MS67. Of course, it does not hurt that the issue is generally known to be a well-produced one, as well as a generously minted one, struck to the extent of some 343,500 coins. Even so, most of the mintage was subsequently melted, and the journey of the survivors that Garrett and Guth describe makes the existence of high-grade survivors seem all the more miraculous:

"It is likely that a significant number of survivors traveled from Denver to Eastern banks. From the banks of the East coast, these coins were soon sent over to Europe to wait out the First World War, subsequent depression, and the next world war as well, before returning to these shores."

The surfaces on this pristine Superb Gem display fantastic reddish-gold and lilac tones interspersed over each side. The surfaces show a pronounced mattelike finish over surfaces that are quite sharply struck and exhibit no obvious marks. This coin would be an excellent acquisition to fit either a date, type, or complete set, as one of the finest known representatives of one of the best-made issues in the series.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 28H3, PCGS# 8876)
