Lustrous Gem 1914-S Ten Dollar Indian

1914-S $10 MS65 PCGS. The extreme rarity of the 1914-S in the better grades of Uncirculated is well known to specialists and is extensively discussed in the write-up for the MS66 below. Suffice it to say that fewer than two dozen Gems have been certified by the two major services. When the MS66 below was sold in June 2006, the cataloger for ANR noted "...examples that appeared such important collections as Thaine Price, where the specimen was catalogued as Choice Mint State, and that of William Thomas Michaels whose collection contained a MS-65, graded by NGC. Going back to the Eliasberg and Norweb Collections, it is significant to note that the date was represented in both cabinets by pieces graded AU-50!" All these collections are noted for high quality coins, and it is a significant offering for the collector of ten dollar Indians that an MS65 and an MS66 are offered in the same sale.
This piece has the same frosted mint luster and matte-like surfaces as the MS66. The striking details are similar as well. The main difference between the two is the presence of several small abrasions (magnification required) that are scattered over each side of this piece. Rich, even, deep orange-gold color completes the description of this important, key issue in the ten Indian series.

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
