    1915-S Ten Dollar, MS65
    Outstanding Eye Appeal

1915-S $10 MS65 PCGS. Ex: Kutasi. The 1915-S is an absolute as well as a condition rarity in the ten dollar Indian series. Only 59,000 pieces were struck, and apparently few were shipped overseas as no hoards are mentioned in the literature and so few Uncirculated pieces known. Fewer than 250 Mint State pieces have been certified to date by PCGS and NGC combined, with the vast majority of these graded MS63 or less. At the Gem level, only eight other coins have been certified with four in higher grades (11/11).
This is a particularly clean and attractive example. It is also a coin that has been an integral part of four major collections of ten Indians. The surfaces have pronounced granularity (not always the case on 1915-S tens) with satiny mint luster. Both sides exhibit lovely peach-gold and mint-green color with occasional whispers of lilac interspersed, and each is impeccably preserved. The latter is a significant attribute because most Mint State 1915-S survivors display "numerous abrasions" (David Akers, 20th Century United States Gold Coins, p. 193). The only identifiers that can be reliably used for pedigree purposes on the present coin are a short horizontal mark below Liberty's eye, and a tiny alloy stain at 5 o'clock on the obverse. Finally, the design features are sharply impressed, as almost always the case on the '15-S. In summary, this Gem exhibits outstanding technical quality and aesthetic appeal.

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
