Wonderful MS66 1915-S Ten

1915-S $10 MS66 PCGS. As one of the famous low-mintage San Francisco Saint-Gaudens eagle issues, the 1915-S is accorded a special place within the series, and while its fame is not so legendary as the 1920-S, for example, the 1915-S receives its due. As described in The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Phillip H. Morse Collection,

"The 1915-S is in the upper echelon of rarity among ten dollar Indian gold pieces. Only 59,000 pieces were struck, and it appears that some attempt was made to actually place this issue in circulation as the majority of known survivors are in AU condition. The absolute and condition rarity of this issue is undisputed by those who are familiar with this difficult series.

That consensus is reinforced by Garrett and Guth, who, in their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, write of the devastation experienced by the 1915-S: "Not only was this a low-mintage date, but few survivors made it from San Francisco to the Eastern banks where they could escape to Europe to wait out the first half of the 20th century. Most ended up being melted during the 1930s and returned as gold bricks to Fort Knox."
With few survivors extant and most of those showing some degree of wear, it is readily understandable why Mint State pieces should be so prized, particularly in Select and better states. Coins that rate so highly as this Premium Gem are exceedingly elusive; PCGS has certified just two coins at the MS66 level and none finer (11/08). This piece is not merely a technical MS66; it comes alive with eye appeal, vibrantly lustrous in the fiery orange-gold fields that show ample elements of lilac and violet in the hollows closest to the design. The strike is almost uniformly crisp. A single small graze at Liberty's chin should prove useful as a pedigree marker in the future. For the discerning Saint-Gaudens eagle enthusiast who has been frozen out of acquiring a top-tier 1915-S ten until now, this is a fantastic opportunity.
