Near-Gem 1916-S Ten Dollar
1916-S $10 MS64 PCGS. The 1916-S enjoys considerable fame
within the ten dollar Saint-Gaudens series. It is a moderate
rarity, in both absolute and conditional terms, that made its
reputation between the 1930s and 1960s, when it was largely
unavailable, before the emergence of two hoards in the 1970s that
made it the last accessible San Francisco issue of the classic
eagle denomination. This lovely near-Gem has reddish-gold color
with subtle hints of lilac interspersed over the satin-frosted
surfaces. Several small- to medium-sized marks scattered over each
side account for the grade, but none are worthy of individual
mention. Population: 34 in 64, 20 finer (1/12).
