Description

1916-S Ten Dollar, MS64
Frosty Texture, Brassy-Gold Surfaces

1916-S $10 MS64 PCGS. A brassy-gold example with soft mint luster glowing beneath a bold San Francisco Mint strike. The 1916-S was the final eagle produced for the duration of the war-torn decade. Orange accents join a faint-green tinge across the obverse and fine granularity adds faceted appeal to this near-Gem ten. Most 1916-S examples show numerous abrasions that limit the grade, and the present coin has a few minor marks, yet the reverse displays particularly nice luster and smooth surfaces that enhance the orange-gold highlights.

Just 138,500 pieces were struck. Scarce in Select or finer Mint State, the 1916-S is the final affordable S-Mint eagle given the rarity of the 1920-S and 1930-S. Slight blending at the eagle's shoulder and forward talon are seldom sharp for the issue. Population: 40 in 64 (3 in 64+), 23 finer (6/16).
