Exquisite MS66 1916-S Eagle

1916-S $10 MS66 PCGS. The 1916-S gold coinages of tens and twenties were the "last call" for U.S. high-denomination coinage until 1920, and though they were struck while Europe was still gripped by the Great War, significant quantities of the 1916-S eagle made their way across the Atlantic, where they were saved from the great gold melt that took place in their native country. Following the relaxation of import controls, the 1916-S enjoyed considerable repatriation, and small hoard quantities were also discovered within U.S. borders, and so in most grades the 1916-S eagle is readily obtainable with a little patience.
Above the Gem level, however, appearances come much less frequently; the combined certified population shows just eight MS66 examples and two MS67 coins, with none finer than that, and aside from one NGC-graded MS66 coin, they all reside in a PCGS holder. With only 10 coins total graded above MS65, the 1916-S eagle is readily recognized as a condition rarity, and Heritage has offered only a handful of examples on par with the magnificent Premium Gem offered here.
Both sides exhibit rich luster with light to medium yellow-gold color. The overall definition is substantially above-average, though the highest design elements show slight blurring of detail, as often seen. Carefully preserved with a touch of frostiness, though a couple of tiny, isolated marks are visible on the reverse. All things considered, an immensely appealing Premium Gem that is sure to bring enjoyment to the next collector who owns it.(Registry values: N1)
