    1920-S Eagle, Mint State
    Important Series Key, Seldom Offered

1920-S $10 MS60 NGC. The 1920-S Indian Head eagle would be the last issue of the series struck at the San Francisco Mint for a solid 10 years, until the 1930-S issue would mark the end of the S-mint coins. (The common 1926 issue from Philadelphia would intervene between the two S-mint issues.) The 1920-S was itself the first in the series since the 1916-S, regardless of mint. After the 1930-S, the ultracommon 1932 and the ultra-rare 1933 would finish off the series for good.

The 1920-S production was neither large nor small at 126,500 pieces, but clearly most of the mintage was melted at some point. Today the issue is among the most elusive of the entire series, perhaps behind only the 1933 (also a melt rarity) and the 1907 Rolled Rim. Nonetheless, some examples of the 1920-S clearly circulated to some degree, and most survivors range in the AU55 to MS61 grade levels.

This piece boasts far more collector appeal than the grade might imply. Ample luster coats the orange-gold surfaces throughout each side. Scattered scrapes determine the grade, including a patch of thin marks on Liberty's cheek and others in the left obverse field, just above Liberty's eye level. The eagle's neck shows a pair of deep digs, with other smaller marks on the reverse. The obverse strike is far sharper than seen on many examples, even though TY shows minor weakness. Notable softness appears on the lower reverse, in the area around the eagle's claws where they join the branch and the lettering below.

Astute series specialists will undoubtedly recognize the offering of this piece for the important opportunity that it represents. Census: 3 in 60, 23 finer (12/13).
