Description
1920-S Indian Ten, MS61
Important Series Key, Seldom Offered
1920-S $10 MS61 NGC. The 1920-S Indian Head eagle stands
alone in the series as the only S-Mint ten struck for a solid 10
years, until the 1930-S issue marked the end of the San Francisco
Mint ten dollar gold coins. Only the common 1926 issue from
Philadelphia intervenes between those two scarce S-mint issues. The
1920-S eagle was a resumption in the series of sorts, ending the
World War I hiatus that followed the 1916-S issue. After the
1930-S, the ultra-common 1932 and the ultra-rare 1933 finished off
the Indian ten dollar series for good. The 1920-S production was neither large nor small at 126,500 pieces, but clearly most of the mintage was melted at some point. Today the issue is among the most elusive of the entire series, perhaps behind only the 1933 (also a melt rarity) and the 1907 Rolled Rim. Nonetheless, The 1920-S clearly circulated to some degree, with most survivors falling into the AU55 to MS61 grade levels.
This MS61 example offers far more collector appeal than the grade might imply. Ample luster coats the orange-gold surfaces throughout each side. Scattered light abrasions determine the grade, including a patch of thin marks on Liberty's cheek and others in the left obverse field, just above Liberty's eye level. The eagle's neck shows a pair of deep contacts, with other smaller marks on the reverse. The obverse strike is far sharper than seen on many examples, even though TY shows minor weakness. Some softness appears on the lower reverse, in the area around the eagle's claws where they join the branch and the lettering below.
Astute series specialists will undoubtedly recognize the offering of this piece for the important opportunity that it represents. NGC Census: 5 in 61, 21 finer (5/26).
