Description

1920-S Indian Eagle, XF45
Partially Lustrous With Outstanding Color

1920-S $10 XF45 PCGS. By 1920, there was little commercial demand for ten dollar gold pieces in circulation; gold certificates and federal reserve notes had become the preferred medium of exchange, particular in the Eastern states. The San Francisco Mint issued gold eagles sporadically after 1916, and only in limited quantities. The 1920-S mintage amounted to 126,500 pieces, but most of these never left bank or government vaults and were easily recalled and destroyed after President Roosevelt's Executive Order to that effect in 1933. Survivors are scattered throughout the lower Mint State and upper circulated grades.

The present coin is one of only 71 1920-S eagles certified by PCGS. It is near the lower end of the grade placement, but this only makes it more appealing to budget-restricted collectors. The surfaces display lovely rose and coppery-gold color with hints of luster in the fields. Detail is strong, and no distractions are observed. Eye appeal is outstanding. Population: 4 in 45, 65 finer (5/23).
