Description
1930-S Indian Eagle, MS65
Late-Series Melt Rarity
Seldom Seen Finer
1930-S $10 MS65 PCGS. The San Francisco Mint struck a small
production of 96,000 Indian eagles in 1930, the first time the
famous Western facility had struck the denomination since 1920.
Despite the decade-long hiatus, there was little commercial demand
for the coins in the Depression-era economy, and relatively few
examples were ever seen in circulation. Only a handful of
circulated examples have survived, with most of them in lightly
circulated AU grades. The great majority of the small mintage
remained stored in government vaults until the Gold Recall of 1933
took effect, and were subsequently melted. Experts estimate perhaps
95,000 examples were eventually melted into gold bars and stored in
the Fort Knox Bullion Repository.Fortunately, a few high-quality specimens were saved by contemporary numismatists. According to Dave Bowers' A Guide Book of Gold Eagle Coins, "The 1930-S was one of 16 earlier-dated gold coins available in Uncirculated condition for face value (plus mailing) from the Treasury Department in the summer of 1932." Possibly a few hundred pieces were distributed to collectors through official channels. Today, only 150 to 200 1930-S eagles are believed to survive in all grades, with all but five to 10 of them remaining in Mint State. The issue's rarity was recognized fairly early on; the J.F. Bell Collection example realized $200 in 1944, a 1,900% increase over face value only 14 years after the its issuance.
The present coin is a spectacular Gem, with sharply detailed design elements Throughout. Both sides have highly lustrous and brilliant orange-gold surfaces with no breaks in the luster on either side. A minor blemish is evident in the left obverse field with a tiny tick on Liberty's cheek. Otherwise, both sides are pristine and exceptionally attractive. For the connoisseur who seeks exceptional aesthetic appeal, this lot offers an exceptional opportunity. Population: 19 in 65 (5 in 65+), 6 finer (11/24).
