    Description

    1911 Ten Dollar Indian, PR67
    Rare Matte Proof Issue
    Only 95 Examples Struck

1911 $10 PR67 PCGS Secure. CAC. The matte proof ten dollar gold pieces of the Saint-Gaudens design are every bit as appealing as their twenty dollar counterparts -- and more so, to some eyes -- yet they remain underrated and highly collectible compared to their larger relatives. The Saint-Gaudens matte and satin finish proofs of both series are the crème de la crème of American gold coinage, and the two series see unabated, unceasing demand from advanced collectors.

The present PR67 PCGS-certified 1911 eagle is one of only seven in this top grade at PCGS (one of those having the Plus designation in addition); there are none finer (1/18). The proof mintage for the issue was only 95 pieces, but a sizeable minority of those likely survive in pristine condition to this day. Besides its status among the finest for the 1911 issue, this piece is also among the few finest for the entire Saint-Gaudens type. Only a single example of the 1909 eagle, likely a "Roman Finish" coin, is finer for the type at PCGS, in the PR68 grade (1/18).

Although PCGS makes no distinction, informed proof gold collectors know that there is often issue-to-issue, and even coin-to-coin variation, in the textures of matte proof gold pieces. This piece is a fine-grained medium golden-brown in the centers of each side, yielding to slightly darker brownish-gold nearer to the rims. There are no mentionable seams or tears in the fabric of this remarkable coin. A couple of faint contact marks appear, but to describe them would be to overemphasize their impact. In fact, both sides are essentially as struck, simply a gorgeous example of this rare matte proof issue. Population: 7 in 67 (1 in 67+), 0 finer. CAC: 3 in 67, 0 finer (1/18).
