    Description

    1920-S Indian Eagle, AU55
    Challenging Issue in High Grade

1920-S $10 AU55 NGC. From a nominal mintage of 126,500 pieces, the 1920-S Indian eagle is the most challenging issue of the series in Mint State grades. Ten dollar gold pieces played only a limited role in the World War I economy, and no eagles were struck between 1916 and 1920. Many of the coins struck in 1920 remained in government storage until they were melted after the Gold Recall of 1933. The coins that were released show signs of extensive circulation, and few examples were saved for numismatic purposes.

The present coin is an attractive Choice AU specimen that shows just a trace of wear on the well-detailed design elements. The 1920-S always shows some softness on the eagle's wing and leg, and this piece is no exception, but the coin exhibits better-than-average definition on the obverse devices. The light greenish-gold surfaces retain much original mint luster and some minor abrasions on Liberty's chin and neck are the only marks of note. Census: 5 in 55, 41 finer (5/14).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 28H8, PCGS# 8881)

Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
