Description
Enticing Gem 1908 Half Eagle
1908 $5 MS65 PCGS. While the Saint-Gaudens designs of 1907 echoed the coins of ancient Greece, Bela Lyon Pratt's concept for the quarter eagle and half eagle reflected the influence of another past civilization, Egypt. The sunken devices, reminiscent of the incuse relief carvings found at temples and in tombs, created an effectively flat plane on both sides, as the highest points of the portrait and eagle are flush with the field. The Pratt design offered little to no protection for the surfaces, however, and the half eagles in particular often show numerous abrasions. Even the 1908, saved in limited quantities for its novelty, is infrequently found above Choice. This MS65 piece offers shining yellow-orange surfaces with slightly paler color at the margins. Solidly struck and carefully preserved with the exquisite obverse deserving particular mention. A visually appealing example that displays beautifully.
