Description
Desirable MS65 1909 Half Eagle
1909 $5 MS65 PCGS. Among the stated goals of the recessed-relief Indian quarter eagle and half eagle designs was to protect the central devices from wear for an extended period of time. While this goal was achieved to a degree, another problem cropped up: With the devices protected, the fields became the most exposed areas, leaving them vulnerable to unsightly abrasions, particularly on the larger half eagle. As a result, Gems are scarce for virtually all issues in the series, and the 1909 is hardly an exception. This honey-gold example is in esteemed company, with vibrantly lustrous, largely untouched surfaces that show hints of rose and orange near the margins. Well struck and desirable. PCGS has graded just seven finer examples (2/09).(Registry values: N4719)
