Amazing Gem Quality 1909 Half Eagle, MS66 PCGS

1909 $5 MS66 PCGS. The opportunity to bid on any Indian half eagle at this grade level rarely presents itself, with a PCGS population of 47 coins, and just 13 finer examples (5/06). Did we mention that this population is for the entire Indian half eagle series, including all dates from 1908 to 1929? This is an amazing Gem that is tied for the finest certified by PCGS. Both sides have frosty luster with gorgeous honey-gold color and pristine surfaces with only a few tiny marks. The strike is exceptional with bold details throughout. David Akers commented about the rarity of this issue in higher grades, in A Handbook of 20th-Century United States Gold Coins: "The 1909 is clearly not one of the major rarities of the series but it is certainly very difficult to locate in MS-64 or higher grade. Below that level specimens can be located with relatively little searching. True Gems are very rare, maybe two dozen existing in all, and superb quality examples (better than MS-65) are exceptionally rare and, for all practical purposes, unobtainable." Population: 3 in 66, 0 finer (5/06).(Registry values: N7079)
