    1909-O Half Eagle, AU58
Final Issue from the New Orleans Mint

1909-O $5 AU58 NGC. Variety 1. The 1909-O is one of two undisputed keys to the series, ranking just behind the 1929 in terms of overall rarity. A low mintage of 34,200 coins contributes to that status. Even more important is the issue's claim to being the only New Orleans half eagle in the series and the final product from the storied Southern branch mint.

This AU58 representative offers a much stronger strike than what is typically seen, with bold feather detail on the headdress and eagle. Olive and orange-gold surfaces exhibit minimal evidence of friction. A few prominent reeding marks appear on the cheek and in the left obverse field. The mintmark is clear, if not strong.(Registry values: N2998)
