1909-O $5 AU58 NGC. Winter-1....
Description
1909-O Five Dollar, AU58
Singular New Orleans Indian Issue
1909-O $5 AU58 NGC. Winter-1. The New Orleans Mint's days
were numbered when Bela Lyon Pratt's Indian Head design was
introduced for the quarter eagle and half eagle. The Denver Mint
had recently opened and was proving its then-modern machinery was
up to the task of carrying the weight of coinage for the central
part of the country. And the New Orleans Mint, being old with worn
out machinery, was becoming a challenge to keep in operation. In
early 1909, coinage at New Orleans was halted. The branch mint had
only struck 34,200 half eagles with Pratt's design by that time,
and no quarter eagles. Thus, the 1909-O Indian half eagle is a
scarce and sought-after one-issue type for New Orleans. This near-Mint example displays bright yellow-gold color and well-struck design elements, with scattered light abrasions that accompany the grade as expected. Only a trace of wear appears over the design elements.(Registry values: N2998)
