Description

Key Date 1909-O Indian Half Eagle, AU58

1909-O $5 AU58 NGC. The 1909-O is the only Indian half eagle from the New Orleans Mint. It is also easily the lowest mintage date in the series at 34,200 pieces. Collectors completing a type set by issuing mint have to obtain an example of this issue to complete their set. For collectors completing a set of Indian half eagles, this issue is the prized key date. Two varieties are known, distinguished by their mintmarks. The present coin is the variety characterized by a weak mintmark that has been recut on the left side. The other variety has a bold mintmark without doubling. Mint State survivors are rare, and eye appeal is often marginal because of heavy abrasions and impaired luster.
The example offered here has good strike detail and retains much frosty mint luster. There is a scattering of small abrasions, expected for the grade, including some thin scratches near the Indian's chin. The fields and design elements are generally well preserved, and the eye appeal is much better than average for the issue.(Registry values: N2998)
