Description

    1909-O Indian Five Dollar, AU58
    Complete, Well-Formed Mintmark

1909-O $5 AU58 PCGS. CAC. It is one of the ironies of coin collecting that the 1909-O half eagle, one of the keys to the Indian Head series, was struck in the same year that collecting U.S. coins by mintmark got a serious boost in the form of the 1909-S VDB cent. Although Augustus Heaton had published his seminal work on mint marks in 1893, it would take the speculative fever and hefty profits that some collectors made on 1909-S VDB cents for the new style of collecting to really gain a firm foothold in the numismatic community. Two other difficulties stood in the way of collectors putting back examples of the 1909-O half eagle. Its face value was too high for most collectors to afford to stash away coins at the time, even if they were aware of the low mintage of 34,200 pieces. And the mintmark was weakly struck on most specimens, even though a minority showed a bold mintmark. This piece shows a complete, well-formed O to the left of the fasces on the lower reverse. Significant luster remains, as one would expect from the grade. The surfaces are a bit choppy, and the overall strike details are well brought up for this often troublesome issue.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 25ZK, PCGS# 8515)
