    Description

    1909-O Half Eagle, AU58
Only New Orleans Mint Indian Five

1909-O $5 AU58 PCGS Secure. Variety 1. The 1909-O is the only Indian half eagle struck at the New Orleans Mint, making it a must-have issue for branch mint type collectors. The 1909-O also boasts a low mintage of 34,200 pieces, but it is not quite as elusive as that modest production total would suggest. The New Orleans Mint was closed for coinage operations after 1909, which may have alerted contemporary collectors to save the coins for their novelty value.

The present coin is an attractive near-Mint specimen, with strongly impressed design elements that show just the slightest trace of wear on the high points. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces show only a few minor abrasions and the mint luster is unusually strong. PCGS has graded 81 numerically finer examples (6/18).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 25ZK, PCGS# 8515)
