Mint State 1909-O Half Eagle
Last O-Mint Gold Coin
1909-O $5 MS61 NGC. The 1909-O half eagle's low mintage of
34,200 pieces makes it the key to the Indian Head five dollar
series, but its status as the last O-mint gold coin increases its
historical appeal in the eyes of many collectors. The old Mint on
Esplanade Avenue in New Orleans still stands today, maintained by
the Louisiana State Museum (along with four other buildings) coming
through Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 relatively unscathed, like
most of the French Quarter. This memento of the facility's closure
101 years ago boasts a fully formed mintmark and well-struck
surfaces with orange-gold coloration. The scattered fields marks
are mostly confined to the reverse, around the motto. Acquisition
of this attractive piece would certainly be cause for celebration
with coffee and beignets. Census: 64 in 61, 45 finer
