Sharp MS61 1909-O Half Eagle Rarity

1909-O $5 MS61 PCGS. The 1909-O half eagle represents the swan song of the New Orleans Mint, which closed in 1909 after 71 years of coinage operations. The 1909-O half eagle represents a number of significant milestones in U.S. coinage. It is the only O-mint 20th century half eagle, the last gold coin struck at the New Orleans Mint, and the first half eagle struck in New Orleans since 1894. Due to its small mintage of 34,200 coins and low subsequent survival, it is also the key to the Indian Head half eagle series. This Mint State coin offers bright yellow-gold surfaces that are sharply struck overall. There are numerous small- to medium-sized abrasions that account for the grade, including a tick on the right side of the mintmark. Population: 17 in 61, 38 finer (2/10).(Registry values: N4719)
