Description

1909-S Half Eagle, Strong MS64
Conditionally Rare California Issue

1909-S $5 MS64 PCGS. CAC. The San Francisco Mint coined 297,200 half eagles in 1909. However, PCGS CoinFacts ranks the 1909-S five as the fourth rarest in the 24-issue series overall and third rarest in grades of MS60 or better. Indeed, there are only six numerically finer examples at PCGS, plus two more at NGC.

This near-Gem is high-end for the grade. It boasts frosty luster over warm golden-orange surfaces. The headdress and eagle's feathers are razor-sharp, as is the rest of the Pratt sunken-relief design. Ticks are minimal. Population: 21 in 64 (6 in 64+), 6 finer. CAC: 8 in 64, 2 finer (12/22).(Registry values: N7079)
