Description

1909-S Half Eagle, MS64
Few Finer, Housed in 'Rattler' Holder

1909-S $5 MS64 PCGS. The 1909-S is one of the highly sought after condition rarities in the Indian half eagle series. Despite a mintage of 297,000 coins, this San Francisco issue circulated, leaving Mint State examples elusive through MS63 and conditionally rare any finer. Many pieces have muted luster and coloration, but this example displays deeply colorful and original patina for an exceptional visual experience. This Choice half eagle is well-struck with only the slightest softness on the central motifs. Vibrant cherry-orange surfaces are accented with hues of caramel-gold and lilac layered in rich mint luster. The chieftain only shows a couple tiny grazes while the eagle is perched without any noticeable distractions. Light, trivial field marks account for the grade but do not interfere with the exceptional eye appeal. PCGS reports only six numerically finer examples (2/26). Housed in a generation 1.2 "rattler" holder.(Registry values: N7079)
