    Near-Gem 1909-S Half Eagle
    Seldom Seen in Finer Grades

1909-S $5 MS64 PCGS. The 1909-S half eagle is scarce in near-Gem condition and rare at the Gem level. A hoard of Mint State coins was uncovered in the 1970s, but most of those pieces graded from MS60 to MS63. The present near-Gem is one of only 15 such submissions at PCGS, and only four examples are finer: one in MS65, two in MS66, and one in MS67 (3/13). This piece is reddish-gold throughout both sides with generous luster and excellent eye appeal. The Indian's cheek is free of all but a couple of minuscule marks that require a loupe to perceive, and the obverse elsewhere is largely unmarked. A thin scrape above the eagle and one through the motto, along with a few other minor ticks on the reverse, account for the grade.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 25ZL, PCGS# 8516)
