Description

1909-S Indian Head Half Eagle, MS65
Condition Census Rarity

1909-S $5 MS65 PCGS. Uncirculated examples of the 1909-S Indian half eagle are much more elusive than the date's mintage of 297,000 pieces might suggest. Most seen grade no finer than MS62, making even MS63 examples a challenging acquisition for most collectors. The Gem offered here is within the Condition Census for the grade, and it is the first MS65 coin we have handled since 2001. More recently we have seen a couple MS66 pieces come to market, but the last of those to appear in our auctions was in 2020. The current coin is undeniably rare and important.

Beautifully luminous surfaces engulf well-struck design elements with rich orange-gold and honey hues across minimally marked surfaces. Each side is well struck, and the small surface marks that limit the grade from being even higher are unobtrusive. The advanced Indian gold expert should not let this piece pass by. Population: 3 in 65 (1 in 65+), 3 finer (11/24).(Registry values: N10218)
