Description

Lovely Gem 1910 Indian Half Eagle
None Finer at PCGS

1910 $5 MS65 PCGS. Gold gurus Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth note that they consider the 1910 issue "an available date in Gem grades for this series." The last three words of warning are key to understanding the statement, however, as pieces in MS65 are a full order of magnitude rarer than MS64 pieces, according to the current combined NGC/PCGS population data. While it is true that Gem 1910s are more available, according to Garrett-Guth, than 15 of the 24 issues in the series, it is equally true that Gems of whatever stripe are the subject of intense demand by type and date collectors alike.
This piece is one of 17 Gems of the issue so certified at PCGS, and there are none finer at that service. NGC has certified 21 pieces in MS65, with two coins finer (7/07). The surfaces offer striking eye appeal, with a combination of deep sunset orange-red in the fields complementing tinges of azure-hazel on the highpoints. Brilliant luster emerges unimpeded from both sides, which show none but the most trivial contact marks away from the focal areas. Simply lovely!
