Condition Rarity 1911 Gem Half Eagle
1911 $5 MS65 NGC. The 1911 is one of the most common issues in the Indian Head half eagle series. NGC/PCGS population data point to its ready availability in Mint State grades though MS63. Near-Gems are somewhat scarce, Gems are rare, and higher-grade specimens are virtually unobtainable. The present Gem offering displays pleasing luster emanating from surfaces bathed in apricot-gold and mint-green patination tinted with lilac. Some of the feathers in the headdress exhibit the usual softness, but overall the design elements show better definition than ordinarily seen. A few minor grade-consistent marks are visible, including some inoffensive hair-thin abrasions in the date area. Census: 39 in 65, 1 finer (7/09).(Registry values: N7079)
