Description

Gem 1911 Indian Head Half Eagle
In-Demand Type Coin

1911 $5 MS65 NGC. Its large mintage of 915,000 pieces makes the 1911 half eagle an available date in lower Mint State grades, and a popular choice for type collectors. The issue becomes scarce in MS64, and Gems are quite elusive. In A Handbook of 20th Century United States Gold Coins, David Akers opines "Gems are rare in an absolute sense" and "MS-66s are virtually unknown."
The present coin is a delightful Gem, with lustrous, greenish-gold surfaces. The strike is a little soft on the lower feathers of the headdress, a feature commonly seen on this issue. While the 1911 is usually seen heavily abraded, the surfaces of this example show only a few insignificant handling marks. Census: 43 in 65, 1 finer (6/10).(Registry values: N7079)
