Description

Terrific Gem 1911 Half Eagle

1911 $5 MS65 PCGS. The 1911 sported a comparatively high mintage for the Indian half eagle series, with the third-highest production at the time, behind only the 1909-D and 1911-S. Compared to its S-mint counterpart, however, the 1911 has a better survival rate, particularly in Mint State grades. As a consequence, the P-mint issue is comparatively more available and more affordable, though loftier levels of preservation remain challenging.
Garrett and Guth (2006) note that "(most of) the 1911 half eagles are found with minor weakness on the headdress feathers and with average luster." The strike of this piece, however, is bold throughout, and the emerald-accented lemon-gold surfaces display vibrant luster. The devices and fields are equally well-preserved. This issue is scarce in Gem and practically impossible to acquire in better condition; PCGS has certified only one finer representative (7/07).
