Description
Resplendent 1911 Half Eagle, Gem Mint State
1911 $5 MS65 PCGS. With a mintage of over 900,000 pieces, the 1911 half eagle ranks as one of the more common issues in the series in most grades. The critical statement is "most grades," as the 1911 is seldom seen in Gem Uncirculated and is virtually impossible to locate any finer. Although NGC and PCGS report a combined 90 pieces in grades above Choice, a significant portion of that number is undoubtedly the result of resubmissions. In addition, the immense desirability of this issue in MS65 causes any such example that appears on the market to fetch a hefty sum. This resplendent yellow-orange specimen displays impressive satiny luster that sparkles throughout. Although most pieces have minor weakness on the headdress with average luster, this piece is sharply defined and has tremendous mint bloom, which places it at a level above the vast majority of its counterparts. Several minuscule grazes limit the grade, but overall this example has been remarkably well-preserved. NGC and PCGS combined have certified only two pieces finer than this appealing Gem (8/08), which is housed in a green label holder.(Registry values: N7079)
