Description

Scarce 1911-S Half Eagle, MS64

1911-S $5 MS64 PCGS. The 1911-S half eagle, despite its rather generous mintage of 1,416,000 pieces, is scarce in all Mint State grades, though perhaps slightly less so in the MS60 to MS62 range. Its scarcity elevates dramatically above that level, with about 180 MS63 to MS66 coins having been seen by PCGS and NGC. This near-Gem example displays beautiful orange-gold and lime-green patina over well frosted surfaces, and a sharp strike imparts good definition to the design features, including the mintmark. Kept from potential Gem status by a few minute facial marks. Population: 18 in 64, 8 finer (7/07).
