Description

1914-S Half Eagle, MS63
Challenging S-Mint Issue

1914-S $5 MS63 NGC. By 1914, banknotes were circulating extensively in the eastern portions of the United States, but in the Western regions, gold coins were still the preferred medium of exchange. Most of the 263,000 half eagles produced at the San Francisco Mint that year were apparently placed into circulation, as the surviving population of Mint State survivors is rather small compared to those of the Philadelphia and Denver issues. Any piece grading finer than MS62 is highly elusive, and Choice or Gem-quality examples are genuinely rare. This pleasing MS63 example displays soft bronze-gold luster and well-struck design elements. Surface abrasions are minimal, with none worthy of individual mention. Census: 17 in 63, 7 finer (6/14).(Registry values: N4719)
