Description
1915-S Indian Half Eagle, MS64+
Elusive Issue in High Grade
Only One Finer Certified
1915-S $5 MS64+ NGC. The 1915-S Indian half eagle is an
elusive date in all grades and one of the most challenging issues
of the series at the MS64 level. Even the famous 1909-O and the key
1911-D are not as rare in Gem condition. In his catalog of the Dr.
Thaine B. Price Collection David Akers remarked :"The 1915-S is one of the rarest and most important issues in this very difficult series. Even in the most minimal Uncirculated grades, the 1915-S is a very scarce issue. However, rarity increases significantly as grade increases and, in Choice Uncirculated or better condition, the 1915-S Half Eagle is one of the premier rarities among all Twentieth Century United States gold coins. The mintage was not particularly small since 164,000 were struck, but like most San Francisco Mint issues, it is clear that they were largely put into circulation and few ere saved as me
Apparently the half eagle was not an important denomination in the national economy during the World War I era. Half eagles were produced exclusively at the San Francisco Mint in 1916, with a nominal production total of 240,000 pieces, after which the denomination was not struck again until 1929.
The present coin is a high-end Choice specimen with well-preserved yellow and rose-gold surfaces that show only minor signs of contact. The design elements are sharply detailed in most areas, but there are signs of die buckling near the rims and the mintmark is slightly deformed. NGC has graded only 10 coins in the present grade, with one finer, while PCGS has graded no specimens better than MS64 (10/13).(Registry values: N7079)
