1916-S $5 MS63 PCGS. Except for a few commemorative gold dollars that were produced in 1916 and 1917, gold coinage was suspended in 1916 during the early stages of World War I. The next regular issue U.S. gold coin was struck in 1920. Half eagles, eagles, and double eagles were struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1916, totaling 1,174,500 coins with a face value of $18,505,000. One of those coins was the present Select Mint State example that displays sharp design details and lovely amber-gold luster.(Registry values: N2998)
