Description

1916-S Five Dollar, MS64
Challenging in High Grade

1916-S $5 MS64 PCGS. CAC. In 1916, only the San Francisco Mint struck half eagles. Although gold coinage in general was not halted until 1933, there would only be one other production run of this denomination, and it would take place at the Philadelphia Mint in 1929. Commercial demand for gold had largely been replaced by paper currency, and bullion backing for gold certificates was more easily performed by double eagles. The 1916-S half eagle is sought-after in any condition, but it is notably elusive in pleasing Mint State grades. The present Choice example is considerably finer than the typical representative but it is not as rare as the prohibitively expensive Gems. The strike is bold, and each side displays satiny yellow-gold mint luster. A few light, scattered ticks determine the grade. PCGS has seen only 16 numerically finer submissions (7/16).(Registry values: N4719)
