Description

Elusive 1916-S Indian Five Dollar MS65

1916-S $5 MS65 PCGS. Also accompanied by NGC insert #624701-006 as MS65. From the same consignor as the unforgettable 1914-S Indian Five Dollar comes this noteworthy Gem example. Both sides are satiny in texture and lavishly frosted beneath orange and rose patina. Trivial reeding marks in two places just above the headdress are the only appreciable signs of contact. Save for the almost invariably indistinct mintmark, the strike on this first rate 1916-S is sharply defined over the major devices. As mentioned in the description of the Harold Anderson specimen, a quantity of this issue was released out of a Central American hoard, but none of the coins are believed to have been any nicer than MS63 quality, thus this beautifully preserved Half Eagle is clearly among the nicest in existence. Population: 8 in 65, 3 finer (7/04). (#8532) (Registry values: N7079)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 28DY, PCGS# 8532, Greysheet# 9331)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
