Description
Elusive 1916-S Gem Five Dollar
1916-S $5 MS65 PCGS. Advanced collectors of Indian Head half eagles seldom have an opportunity to acquire such a high-grade example of this date, as relatively few Gem-quality pieces are known; PCGS/NGC population reports indicate 16 MS65 coins have been certified, and five pieces finer (MS66s). This MS65 specimen has rich orange and rose colored gold surfaces with frosty luster. It is well struck with sharp obverse and reverse details throughout. A rather large hoard of these coins was discovered a number of years ago, but nearly all pieces from that hoard were at the lowest Mint State grade levels, and contained no MS64 or MS65 coins (David Akers, 1988).From The Jim O'Neal Collection of Indian Half Eagles.(Registry values: N7079)
