    Description

    1929 Half Eagle, MS62
    Strong Eye Appeal
    Late-Series Rarity

1929 $5 MS62 PCGS. The year 1929 was nearly over when the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost nearly 25% of its value in two days on Black Monday and Tuesday October 28 and 29, 1929, initiating (or confirming) the Great Depression to follow. On July 8, 1932, the Dow closed at 41.22, its lowest level of the 20th century.

Although the reported mintage of 662,000 half eagles dated 1929 was likely hindsight by that point, few examples of the issue were ever released, and most were clearly melted in the few years that followed, most probably after 1933's Gold Recall. The 1929 issue is the last in the Indian Head series (the first struck since the 1916-S, 13 years previously) and the most difficult overall; circulated examples are seldom seen. The present MS62 PCGS representative shows deep and lovely reddish-peach color that instantly contributes to the considerable eye appeal. An unfortunate nick shows in the center of the Indian's cheek, however, and a couple of smaller hits show on the jawline and before the profile. The reverse is free of singular marks. This piece, with its sumptuous color and good eye appeal, may pose an attractive entry point for this late-series rarity.
