    Description

    Elusive MS63 1929 Half Eagle
    Splendid Depression-Era Rarity

1929 $5 MS63 PCGS. This 1929 half eagle was struck during the year the Depression era began, the first new coinage of the denomination since the 1916-S production. Although 662,000 pieces were recorded struck, the issue is much rarer than such a mintage would indicate. Most examples never saw the light of day before being melted, as the average certified survivor falls somewhere between MS62 and MS63. Akers states conclusively that "most of the original mintage was destroyed in the Mint."
The present MS63 specimen displays splendid surfaces with orange-gold coloration tinged with lilac near the rims. A few minor marks and ticks on each side account for the grade, but the eye appeal is great.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 28E2, PCGS# 8533)
